Introduction: On the final day of Navaratri, the Hindu celebration of Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, commemorates the tremendous victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, the demon king, as described in the Ramayana, one of the largest Hindu mythological writings. Celebrated with much fervor, all over India and in all Hinduism-dominant regions worldwide, the festivity marks its presence with extreme celebrations. The choice of wearing Kurta Pajama during Dussehra in different regions of India varies due to regional cultural influences and traditional practices. Here’s a list of variations:
1. North India:
Punjab and Haryana: The gentlemen wear a very bright-colored set of Kurta pajamas. It may be embroidered with either elaborate designs or traditional motifs in vivid shades of reds, oranges, or yellows.
Uttar Pradesh: The style may be simple designs, but more from the aspect of being wearable. Cotton or silk kurtas in white and pastel colors together with pajamas or churidars could be worn by men.
Rajasthan: The men may go in for Bandhgala kurtas with exquisite threadwork or mirror work.
2. West India:
Gujarat: During the festivities of Navratri which accumulate fervor to culminate in Dussehra, men can wear Chaniya Cholis or Kediyu-Kafni sets in their traditional attire. However, on Dussehra day itself, a Kurta Pajama set of earthy or vibrant colors will do.
Maharashtra: Attire could be in the form of a plain cotton Kurta with pajamas. Bright colors like saffron or white are popular choices.
3. East India:
West Bengal: Men might wear traditional Kurta Pajama sets made of fine cotton or silk during Durga Puja, which ends with Dussehra. The colors are often traditional shades like white, cream, or pastels.
Odisha: Kurta Pajama sets with elaborate patterns or traditional motifs may be part of the style. A typical combination is a white or off-white kurta with contrast pajamas.
Assam: A man wears a Kurta Pajama or trousers with a Gamusa tied over his shoulder. Designed in traditional Assamese motifs, the kurtas depict the region's rich cultural heritage.
4. South India:
Karnataka: Men in Karnataka wear silk or cotton Kurtas with heavy embroidery or fancy borders during the festival. The colors may be bright or subtle, according to choice and regional traditions.
Tamil Nadu: Men wear silk or cotton Kurtas with a Veshti/Dhoti. Usually, the colors are bright and come from the golden, red, or green palette.
Conclusion: while the Kurta Pajama remains a popular choice across India during Dussehra, the specific style, fabric, embroidery, and colors differ greatly from one part to another in how regional traditions, climate, and local customs have shaped its use. That variance accurately captures India's vast cultural diversity and legacy.
