Tips for care and maintenance: How to keep your ethnic wear looking great

Introduction: Donning ethnic clothes not only elevates our appearance but also celebrates our cultural identity. From Weddings to social gatherings, it helps us get a look everyone cherishes. However, after we use it, it goes straight to our wardrobe and stays there until the next event arrives. Over that time, the garments might lose their original look, the fabric might fade, and their strength could diminish, and when we use them the next time, they might not give us the same look they gave when we first bought them, which is very disappointing. Hence, we should take care of our ethnic wear in a way that they don’t lose their ethnicity and cultural essence.

Following are some tips that might help you keep your ethnic wear looking great for a long time:

Read the washing instructions properly:

The most important tip you can follow to keep your ethnic wear looking great is to read the washing instructions properly. Some individuals neglect to follow the care instructions correctly, leading to damage to the fabric of their clothes. Remember that the material may be ultra delicate and fine and for this reason, you must not take any action on your own without going first through the instructions. You should establish whether the material can be either hand-washed or machine-washed, whether it is required to be ironed, and whether any chemicals can be used on it, for example, bleaching. Knowing these things will help you a lot to keep your ethnic wear perfect for a very long time.

Ironing techniques:

Before ironing you must determine the type of material of the garment by going through the label as you might be overheating it by ironing it unnecessarily. However, if the dress contains any beads, zari work, mirror work, sequins work, etc then steaming would be a very good option to remove creases and wrinkles.  And for cotton clothes ironing would be a better option. Since removing wrinkles and creases from clothes is very essential before wearing them, so you must plan it properly.

Avoid direct sunlight:

Ethnic clothes are made up of very delicate materials that need proper attention and care and their exposure to direct sunlight can destroy their material and color making them look pale and restrained. Hence, they must be placed in a cool and dry place.

Cleaning Instructions:

Ethnic wear comes in different materials and some of them are very delicate and need proper attention. Fabrics like cotton, silk, linen, etc, lose their shape and color when washed in a machine and must be gently hand-washed. However, expensive and delicate ethnic wear, must not be frequently cleaned and placed in shadows after use to avoid direct sunlight, and if needed they can be washed, but consider using professional laundry services so that they retain their ethnicity.

Storage procedure:

Heavier garments like partywear sarees, designer suits, and huge-flared lehengas should be hung to avoid creases, whereas light fabrics can be folded and stored. Packets of silica gel must be kept with the clothes to protect them from moisture as they are capable of soaking humidity. Use container bags and vacuum-sealed container bags to store the garments safely, free from dust and moisture. Take out the clothes that are not worn for a long period, and iron or steam them, to avoid getting permanent wrinkles and creases.

Use of scented packs:

When you open your wardrobe after some days and predict an entirely different smell from the clothes stored, then consider putting scented sachets in the wardrobe it keeps the clothes fresh and insects away.

Avoid chemical exposure:

The use of chemical substances with ethnic clothes can destroy their ethnicity and make them look pale. While washing them also one must not use chlorine-based substances, Bleach, acidic cleaners, or harsh detergents as they can destroy the fabric quality and make them colorless. Direct exposure to perfumes can also be harsh on them, so one must not spray perfume directly on ethnic clothes.

Conclusion: Hence, taking proper care of ethnic wear is very important to preserve their beauty and heritage and to maintain their elegance for an extended period. As ethnic wear binds us with our roots, hence by taking these steps we can pay tribute to the craftsmanship and heritage behind each piece.
